Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicants during the week of June 1-7. Eleven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were under the age of 21.

Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicants during the week of June 1-7. Eleven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 447 DUI arrests compared with 539 during the same period last year, a decrease of 17.1 percent, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Kona, South Hilo and Puna officers arrested six drivers in each district while South Kohala officers arrested two drivers and Ka’u officers arrested one driver.

There have been 649 major accidents so far this year compared with 696 during the same period last year.

So far this year, there have been 11 traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with seven during the same period last year, an increase of 57.1 percent.

To date, four fatalities were related to drugs, or a combination of drugs and alcohol.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
